2008: The Year in Sex
Posted By jss on December 31, 2008
We could try to do this in song, in Billy Joel “We Didn’t Start the Fire” style:
Carla Bruni, Sarkozy
settle for monogamy
Spitzer with his pants down
Call girl finds some brief renown
John Edwards is a lure
National Enquirer
Elizabeth, blown away, stays married to him anyway … what else do we have to say?
Etcetera. But this is a First Post, and dammit, that’s just not the tone I want here, at the beginning of all things. I’ve been mulling this for days. Bear with me for a few moments, or days, or weeks, while I hit my stride. All things will be revealed in good time.
A song lyric that would be more in the spirit of how I think this blog will evolve has been stuck in my head all through the holidays. So let’s put that down … perhaps it will go out of my head and into yours:
Birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it …
Let’s do it.
Let’s fall in love … (Cole Porter, 1928)
Alanis Morissette sings this about as well as anyone. Give it a listen, while I think about sex. And 2008. And perhaps we’ll be all caught up with each other, on the other side of the song:
Nice, huh? Anyone who thinks that is a love song, as opposed to a sex song (Yes, I know it can be both, but I’m making you choose) …. well, that would be a sign that you are visiting the wrong blog.
Let’s talk about sex in 2008. The No. 1 sex story of the year, the most important thing that happened:
- Was not New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigning in shame after he got caught having expensive sex with prostitutes call girls escorts … umm … well, let’s call them what they are: Really hot young chicks who can get rich dudes to pay for sex.
- Was not John Edwards having an affair, or a love child, or being a bonerhead.
- Was not the marriage of Carla “I’m No Longer a Man Eater” Bruni and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Though if she turns back into Carla “Easily Bored with Monogamy” Bruni, that’ll be in the running in 2009.
- Was not Bristol Palin’s teen pregnancy.
- Was not Max Moseley’s taste for BDSM — though the fact that he was willing to go to court to defend his rights to both privacy and a little kink makes it a better story than any of those above.
Nope, none of those. The biggest sex story of 2008, By Far, was the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States. Yes, it was. Get your mind out of the gutter, especially … yeah, you. The one with the Fox News tattoo. I am not suggesting that the president-elect is anything other than what he has demonstrated that he is — a bright, pragmatic coalition building, incrementalist policy wonk, with big ears, decent abs and the hottest First Lady since Jackie Kennedy.
What does his election have to do with sex? Well, a lot of things. No, state dinners will not be clothing-optional. No, there will not be a bowl of condoms in the Lincoln Bedroom.
No, there won’t be any scandals with interns and cigars.
But within the U.S. government there will be:
- Support for abortion and contraceptive rights.
- A Justice Department repopulated with prosecutors who have not had to pass a right-wing litmus test. Ditto for the judiciary.
- A renewed appreciation for freedom of speech rights and the First Amendment.
- Defunding and de-emphasis of failed, discredited abstinence-only sex education in schools.
That’s just for starters.
The second biggest story about sex in 2008, for me, is also my lead story for 2009 — the rise of sexual networking, in parallel and tandem with social networking. Sexual networking. You’ll want to know what I mean, huh?
Stop back in the New Year, I’ll be here. Please feel free to comment in the meantime. And if you want to send me a photo of whatever you’re doing at midnight … anything that looks interesting and/or blissful … I’ll post them! The email is: jss at intotemptation.net.

"Into Temptation" is a usually-but-not-always safe-for-work forum about evolving social-sexual networks and how they have changed and are changing lives. It will also loosely chronicle the research, writing and publication, I hope in 2010, of a book by the same name.

AWESOME first post, my friend! I’m lovin’ it already. Do you intend to update this blog regularly? If so I will gladly add you to my blogroll. Talk about quality! And I agree with your take on the #1 sex story of the year. Did you catch this post on my blog? Too cute!

TBK: You’re the best, and thanks for adding me! I’ve loved your blog and it has a special place in my heart because I found it when I wasn’t looking for it … you know how that feels, like when you get something good you weren’t expecting?
